MILITARY ART

A brief history of Robert Baldwin may be found by following this link: ROBERT M BALDWIN HISTORY.

Robert served from February 1943 through the end of World War II when he was discharged on January 16, 1946. He was sent to Europe in January of 1945 and saw action in the Rhine Jump - Operation Varsity as part of the larger Operation Plunder at which time the allied armies crossed the Rhine River and entered into Germany on March 24, 1945. He was a member of the first army of occupation in Berlin at the war's end. Although he was an active pictorial recorder of his environment no matter where he was, it was during this period in Germany that he sketched many of the military pictures which are displayed here. He converted them to water color art when he returned to the United States. Others were created from his memories of the times and are appropriately dated. These pictures and descriptions are valuable, first-hand views, recollections and commentaries on the war action by a common soldier. Values quoted are estimates of the value of the originals at the time of the artist's death in 2003 and are based on the content of the pictures, their collectability and of the reputation of the artist. Some pictures have been purchased and their values are noted. The value of subsequent reprints of donated works have been based on the actual reproduction cost of the collections.
